These scripts are for for use with InterSLIP on your Macintosh and TIA on your Unix shell account .
They allow you to go back and forth from Z-Term (or Microphone, etc) to InterSLIP and TIA without disconnecting from your host. In other words, you can read your mail with pine, switch to Netscape to look at web pages, go back to Unix to read newsgroups with nn or trn, then go back to Netscape, etc.
Can You Use These Scripts?
To use these scripts, your modem and communications program must allow you to quit the program without without disconnecting from your host. Most modems and programs will do this, but there are a few (primarily Powerbooks with internal modems), which disconnect whenever you quit the communications program. To check, connect to your host with your regular communications program, quit the communications program, wait about 15 seconds and then restart the communications program. If you are back at your shell prompt and can continue your Unix session, these scripts should work for you. If you cannot resume your session, check your modem initialization string to be sure you are not changing the &D setting. To quit without disconnecting, &D must stay at &D0, which is the factory setting on most modems. If you have a Powerbook with an internal modem that will not allow you to quit without disconnecting, there does not appear to be any available fix for that, and you will not be able to use these scripts.
Set your Serial Port Speed
Set the serial port speed in InterSLIP and your communications program to either 19200 or 57600 depending on your modem. Do not use 14400, 28800 or 39400, since the script interpreter will not recognize them.
Tailor the Scripts to your Host
OnLine Dialing Script assumes that the serial port speed you set in InterSLIP and your communications program will be 57600. If you use 19200 in InterSLIP and your communications program, open the script in a word processor or text editor, go to the line which starts "serreset" and change 57600 to 19200.
OnLine Gateway Script You must put your host's "hostname" in Label 3 in place of "world". Get your hostname by typing "hostname" (without the quotes) while you are logged in to your Unix host on a communications program (Z-Term or other). If the hostname you receive ends in figures (like "netcom 13" or "crl5") omit the figures when you put the hostname in the script (i.e. use "netcom" or "crl") since these figures may change each time you connect. The script assumes that you open TIA manually by typing "tia"; and TIA's response ends with "software". If you are on a host which uses different words, just change them in Labels 1 and 4 of the script.
SETUP
A. Open your InterSLIP Folder (it is in the Preferences folder in your System Folder). It contains two folders marked "Dialing Scripts" and "Gateway Scripts, as well as your InterSLIP configuration files and the InterSLIP Preferences file.
B. Put the " OnLine Dialing Script" in the Dialing Scripts folder and the "OnLine Gateway Script" in the Gateway Scripts folder.
C. Select your existing InterSLIP configuration file (not InterSLIP Preferences). Duplicate it and rename it "OnLine Connection" (or whatever, depending on what mood you are in)
D. Open InterSLIP Setup and double click on "OnLine Connection". In the window that opens, go to the "Dial Script" pop-up menu and select "OnLine Dialing Script". Go to the "Gateway" pop-up menu and select "OnLine Gateway Script". Do not change anything else.
OPERATION
1. Use Z-term, Microphone, etc. to connect to your host. Log in and get past the terminal type confirmation (i.e. (vt100)?).
2. Anytime after that, Command-Q to quit Z-Term without disconnecting
3. Open InterSLIP Setup and click on "Connect"
4. When you see "ready for your application", open Netscape (or other SLIP programs).
5 When finished, Command Q to quit Netscape
6. Click "Disconnect" on InterSLIP Setup.
7. When you see "please quit InterSLIP/open comm.prgm", Command-Q to close InterSLIP, and then open Z-Term.
8. You will be back at your shell prompt in Unix. There will be some characters above the prompt which you can disregard
9. You can now (1) continue in the shell; (2) logout; or (3) go back to InterSLIP and Netscape starting at step 2, above
ADVICE
10. Remember to quit Z-Term before opening InterSLIP Setup and vice-versa. If you don't, you may be lucky and get a dialog box but, more likely, you will hang your system and have to restart.
11. If you expect to come back to Netscape again in the same session, you can just close the Netscape Window (Command W), instead of quitting Netscape. This speeds up reopening. You must do one or the other (Quit or Close) to avoid hanging the system.
12. Before you click on the "Disconnect" button in InterSLIP Setup, you have to click on the InterSLIP Setup window to make it active.
13. Remember: With these OnLine scripts, the "Disconnect" on InterSLIP Setup leaves you still connected to the host. You have to logout manually using Z-Term.
